MARINE

CONTAINER VESSELS, BULK FREIGHT, OIL TANKERS, CRUISE LINERS, LEISURE CRAFT

Increasing fuel costs is a huge problem for all sectors, but especially for shipping. Similarly diesel bug affects all diesel users, but Diesel bug is especially common in boats’ fuel tanks because of the long periods boats are moored for – whether they are on the canals, open sea or a marina. If the tanks are half full – diesel is left to sit and the moisture from the air turns into water – causing sediment build up.

Diesel bug can cause several consequences including: Reduced power and misfiring of your boats engine, blocked fuel filters resulting in frequent costly replacements and repairs, wear and tear on your boat engines moving parts and gaskets etc wreck engines, corrode fuel tanks, and leave you powerless at sea.

The rise of biofuel will only increase the propensity for problems due to it’s hygroscopic nature. Four out of five diesel engine failures are a result of the dreaded diesel bug, don’t become yet another victim of this avoidable statistic, start using ElimiNOX Eco™.

Cost Savings

ElimiNOX Eco ™ provides an immediate cost-saving and decarbonising solution by increasing fuel efficiencies of marine diesels, MGO/MDO, biofuels and ULFSO/VLFSO.

The shipping industry is key to the global economy, transporting 90% of traded goods. It will rely on hydrocarbon liquid fuels for decades to come.  Despite its importance to the world economy, the sector and especially major maritime groups, are under pressure to both make progress towards climate goals and to take measures to increase fuel efficiencies.

ElimiNOX Eco ™ and Berol® 6446 will form an important component in any shipping group’s strategy to improve its emissions profile and reduce fuel consulption:

  • Reduced Fuel Consumption : MGO ● MDO ● ULSFO ● VLSFO HFO
  • Engine Efficiency: Improved Power ● Improved Torque ● Reduced Temperatures
  • Oil Reclamation: Ship Slops ● Crude Oil ● Lubricant Oil
  • Reduced Emissions: Greenhouse Gases ● Visible Black Soot ● PM2.5 and PM10
  • Eradication of Diesel Bug: Removes Free Water ● Retains Fuel Quality ● Adds Stability
  • Improved Lubricity: Reduced Friction ● Improved Performance ● Reduced Maintenance Costs

Emissions

There is no doubt that diesel (in addition to petrol) engines have contributed considerably to global pollution and climate change.

As a result, President Biden is under pressure to introduce legislation to phase out diesel and gasoline vehicles by 2050. Several states either have such legislation or are planning it. California by Executive Order has banned the sale of new gasoline cars by 2035.  New York recently passed a directive requiring all new car sales to be electric by 2035 and trucks by 2045.

In the interim, the use of diesel and gasoline will continue, and for those businesses or individuals who have a genuine concern about climate change (carbon emissions) or respiratory health issues (micro particulates, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide), using ElimiNOX Eco ™ will reduce their emissions footprint…materially so.

ElimiNOX Eco ™ reduces the production of harmful, environmentally damaging greenhouse gas emissions such as CO2/NOx (up to 30%), whilst also reducing deadly Particulate Matter (PMs), including soot and smoke (up to 60+% reduction for PM2.5 and 50+% for PM10)

Larger businesses, such container shipping companies and cruise shipping liners, are often subject to ESR requirements. Use of ElimiNOX Eco ™ will improve their ESR performance.

Incorporation of ElimiNOX Eco ™ ought to become an important part of your business’ decarbonisation responsibilities.

ElimiNOX Eco ™ has been rigorously and successfully tested by world renown laboratories including Socotec Laboratories. The test results have been declared as ‘game changing’ for the diesel engine, environmental pollution and the health problems associated with diesel engine pollutants.

Moreover, Bureau Veritas have certified that diesel fuel conditioned with ElimiNox Eco™  not only retains compliance with EN590 but also benefits from an increase of over 30% improvement in Lubricity.

Diesel bug in fuel tanks, both in the vessel and at the port

Over time, stored fuel can suffer from an accumulation of sediments, bacteria, fungi and problems like Diesel Bug. This may lead to costly remedial measures, waste and engine damage, particularly amongst vessels that are less frequently used such as leisure boats, yachts and naval vessels.

Diesel bug is common in a boat’s fuel tanks because of the long periods boats are moored for – whether they are on the canals, open sea or a marina. If the tanks are half full – diesel is left to sit and the moisture from the air turns into water – causing sediment build up.

ElimiNOX Eco ™ helps eliminate this problem by dispersing the troublesome water in fuel therefore removing the environment for microbial growth and Diesel Bug, whilst enhancing fuel quality and adding stability.

If you use biofuel, then your tank is even more susceptible to diesel bug due to it’s hydroscopic nature.

Four out of five diesel engine failures are a result of the dreaded diesel bug, don’t become yet another victim of this avoidable statistic, start using ElimiNOX Eco ™.

Unlike other diesel bug treatments which only kill the diesel bug after it has already built up, ElimiNOX Eco ™ is unique because it eliminates the most common cause of diesel bug – the water in which it grows. ElimiNOX Eco ™ eliminates the water by suspending it as an emulsion within the diesel, removing the growth medium where the diesel bug thrives and actively prevents diesel bug growth between re-fuelling.

ElimiNOX Eco ™ has the added benefit of reducing maintenance and improving the life span of fuel storage tanks.  It will also keep fuel in storage tanks clean, scavenging excess water from fuel tanks maintaining fuel integrity and stability contributing to reduced filter blocking. . It ensures diesel bug is both eliminated and prevented.

Why treat the symptom when you can eliminate the cause using ElimiNOX Eco ™.

A 500 ml bottle of ElimiNOX Eco ™ will treat 1000 L of fuel and costs less than an hours worth of labour  = more fun, less maintenance, less expense and lower emissions.

Using ElimiNOX Eco ™ pays for itself by helping save the cost of expensive engine failures, extends your engines life, reduces service intervals, improves your vessels fuel efficiency

Oil Reclamation: Turn costly waste into enhanced profitable fuels

As you know, your “ship slops” are predominantly composed of water (c. 70%) and liquid hydrocarbon products, including Heavy Fuel Oil and cargo waste e.g. Crude Oil (c. 30%).

Existing processes to “demulsify” this waste by separating the oil and water are time consuming, leaving up to 20% water in the reclaimed oil resulting in a limited market for the product. In addition, the remaining oily water remains a form of ships slops waste.

Heavy industry now favours purer oil products, reducing the market for ship slops.

ElimiNOX has an improved process for the separation of the oil from this waste. It takes the harmful oil and water waste and purifies it within a matter of hours. Reclaimed oils using our process show, in independent testing by Bureau Veritas,  as little as 1.5% moisture content whilst gaining lubricity and remaining stable. The dramatically lower water content improves value and saleability from its increased number of uses. The remaining water layer is also far easier and cleaner to dispose of in an ethical and environmentally sustainable manner.

HFO Emulsification: Reduced emissions, reduced costs

A form of the Product (Berol® 6446) specifically for HFO has shown to significantly improve the burn profile of HFO with added water and ultrasonic technology to enhance the mixing, reducing both emissions and Particulate Matter (PM) production.

Berol® 6446, plus ultrasonic technology, emulsifies up to 18% additional water throughout the HFO. Berol® 6446 allows the formation of a new, long-term stable and homogenous emulsion that can be used directly as a cleaner burning, lower viscosity alternative to current HFOs with numerous benefits including reduced combustion temperatures and increased lubricity, resulting in optimized combustion.

Case Studies

Vessel Evaluation – MGO/MDO

The objective of this study was to measure improvements in performance. Cost savings can be implied, but were not measured.

It consisted of comparable data sets from bollard pull tests* monitoring a CAT 18-cylinder engine on a large Bureau Veritas classed vessel.

Data was collected to establish baseline readings of the vessel, in terms of power and torque produced per litre of fuel consumed, under normal operating conditions, and then with the addition of ElimiNOX Eco ™ for comparison.

Details of the evaluation:

  • Measurements were based on four throttle settings, 25/50/75/100%. These settings directly control the flow of fuel, with a higher % meaning more fuel is fed to the engine. Whilst this makes direct comparisons of total consumption impossible, the output of the engine per litre of fuel consumed at each % throttle setting gives an ideal proxy.
  • Outputs monitored were engine power, torque and temperatures. In a real-world scenario (i.e. not a bollard pull) these outputs directly relate to the speed and time taken to travel from point A to point B in a vessel.
  • If the vessel is producing more KW power and Nm Torque when using SulNOx with the same fuel flow (as determined by the throttle setting), then it follows that in practice throttle setting can be lowered, and thus fuel flow rate also lowered, to achieve the same power as pre-SulNOx use, at a correspondingly reduced fuel consumption.

Results: Dramatically improved engine efficiency

The results demonstrate that using ElimiNOX Eco ™ provides significantly better engine running with lower exhaust, oil and coolant temperatures, meaning reduced emissions, whilst producing more power and torque output.

The increases in power and torque produced per litre of fuel is clear and consistent at different throttle percentages. It is possible that there is some clipping of the torque data from 75% to 100% power settings, with the meter reaching what appears to be its max 10,000 Nm reading.
